I was watching the Philidelphia Eagles blow out the New England Patriots twenty-one to zero in the 2020 Superbowl and as halftime approached, I decided to go get a snack for the upcoming half. So, I went for a walk and decided to get the crab fries from Chickie’s and Pete’s. As I entered the line there were three men in front of me who seemed to have come together. I overheard their conversation and it so happened to be about the writing process a topic I am learning in class. I then decided to engage in conversation with them asking what they knew about the writing process. They responded telling me that they knew a lot as they are professional writers with the names of Don Murray, Mary Karr, and Anne Lamott.
Since I was learning about the writing process in class, I felt it would be smart to get information from a couple of professional writers. So, I start by asking the question “what are some thing I should know about writing and its process?” Don starts off by saying “The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: pre-writing, writing, rewriting.” Mary then gave some simple input and said “Writing is painful” Anne responded saying that what she thought I should know about writing was actually a quote from E.L Doctorow and it was that “Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. I thought these were good things to have in mind while I write but I needed them to explain a little more, so I went on to ask them “Is there any way that you guys can explain some of this into a deeper meaning.” Don started off by telling me he will tell me a little about pre-writing because it is the most important and as it was halftime of the Superbowl, and we did not have much time to discuss so he says “Pre-Writing is everything that takes place before the first draft. Pre-writing usually takes about 85 percent of the writer’s time.” Mary had just got done getting her food and she walked up to continue the conversation and said Reading stuff in an antique-sounding idiom is hard for many readers. I didn’t know what she meant by that at first, but I knew I would google it after the game ended. Anne then said that what she meant by her quote was that “You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” The game was about to start so I told them that “This was a great conversation and that I will keep the information that they gave me for the future writing I will be doing, is there any last information or tips you can tell me before we go our separate ways?” Don thought that I should take this with me when writing and keep it with me and he said “Papers are examined to see what other choices the writer might make. The primary responsibility for seeing the choices is the student. He is learning a process.” Mary then said after finishing some crab fries and having breath that smelled like the sea ““Try learning how to cut out the dull parts.” Anne finished the conversation saying “Almost all good writing begins with terrible first effort. You need to start somewhere.” The game already started about two minutes ago and we failed to realize because we were deep in a conversation about the writing process. I then thanked them for the information, and we went our separate ways.
