In this blog, I will be using a memory from high school football to compose an emotional scene with dialog and symbolism. My scene compares to Hills Like White Elephants because I use a word throughout the scene for symbolism. If you want to see some quick highlights from the game I talk about Click this link.
It was a cold and windy night, a special night. It was the first time my high school football team has ever made the state playoffs. The bus ride up and during pregame you could tell that there was a lot of different feelings and emotions going through everyone. Players, coaches, parents, students and teachers at the school all seemed excited but nervous. The team at the time had about 20 seniors on the roster meaning this could be some players last time ever suiting up in a football uniform for the rest of their life. You would probably think that everything on the line in this game and me being the starting quarterback and cornerback that I would somewhat be nervous, but the funny thing is I wasn’t at all. In my mind I did what I had to do already. When I first got to high school as a freshman the team went 0-9 and wasn’t even close to a win. Then I became the starting quarterback my sophomore year and we got a new coach. The first thing he told me was that by time I'm a senior that we will change this program all the way around. From there I was determined to make that happen, I wanted to be remembered. Now back to the game. First down on the first play of the game coach wanted me to hit our best receiver on a deep pass right away. So, we did and scored our first touchdown of the day. The game stayed close but by halftime we were down a touchdown. We went into the locker room and you could feel the frustration and see in some of the senior's eyes that they wanted it most. There were players screaming at each other, some players were off to the side quiet, and some looked like there dog died but the coaches came in and controlled the situation. They came in and told us what we needed to do to win. Then our head coach came in with a speech to hype us up. To paint a picture of his speech you could pretty much just think about any speech you seen off any football movie except this wasn’t a movie, there wasn’t a happy ending. We went back onto the field and fought and stayed close to the end just to lose 35-28. The game was over, and players automatically started crying, a lot of them were seniors. My emotions didn’t hit me until Everyone was on the field, parents, friends, a girlfriend at the time. Then I couldn’t hold it, now I'm crying as if my dog died too. My coach came and hugged me and told me “don't be sad we did what we talked about and changed the program around, the kids under you see what it's like to get here and we will be back”. A year later they were back, and it was my high schools second time ever in the state playoffs.

In this blog, I will be talking about the time when I went to purchase my first car by myself and showing the different emotions I went through in the process. My past scene compares to My Name Is Margaret by Maya Angelou because our emotions change a good amount of times in our past experiences and sometimes, we both have more than one emotion showing at the same time.
It was an extremely hot day and I was on my way to make one of the biggest decisions I ever made. I was excited, scared, and nervous all at the same time with an hour in a half ride with a friend and my brother ahead of me. I was the one driving and it felt like the closer I got to the dealership to decide on purchasing a 2006 Ford Mustang the more I regretted the whole idea. The whole ride we basically planned our whole negotiating tactics and talked about what I was going to look at and analyze on the car to make sure it was good and didn’t need anything important fixed. The price made me think that something would be wrong with the car because it seemed too good to be true, but we hoped for the best. We finally pulled up to the dealership in New Jersey, which looked nice and had a lot of good cars with good high prices on them which made me a little suspicious why the price of the car I wanted to purchase was lower than the rest of the cars. The dealer seen us as soon as we pulled up and already knew which car I was there to look at without me saying my name or anything. I just thought maybe I was the only person who they had on schedule to come look at a car on this specific day. I don’t think nobody would have wanted to be standing outside in 98-degree weather. After we went inside in the central air and walked around for a little and talked, he then took us to the car. When I first seen it, I thought it was beautiful. It was black and shiny and looked just how it looked in the pictures. He turns the car on, and the engine sounded like music to my ears. Everything was good from the outside view. Now it's time to look under the car and under the hood. Everything looked good there too, so it seemed like everything was a go. I thought to myself that I might as well still ask for the price to go down even lower than what it was already at and mind you it was already at a good price. The number I gave him was kind of radicicolous to ask because the price already came down tremendously on the website, but he called his boss and said it’s a deal and I was surprised but exited. I Took the deal immediately and paid in cash and took the car with me. This was the first car that I went with no parent and paid for myself and little did I know that I was supposed to get the title of the car from them on that day. So, I called them a few days later and I got no answer. Turns out they went bankrupt 3 days after I bought the car and I didn’t have the title so I was scared and angry, I didn’t know what would happen. An agency contacted me, and they knew what had happened and they told me everything would be fine and that they are working on getting titles for multiple people. I’m happy that they got in contact with me and solved the problem so fast Today I am extremely happy with the car and have the title. I was watching the Philidelphia Eagles blow out the New England Patriots twenty-one to zero in the 2020 Superbowl and as halftime approached, I decided to go get a snack for the upcoming half. So, I went for a walk and decided to get the crab fries from Chickie’s and Pete’s. As I entered the line there were three men in front of me who seemed to have come together. I overheard their conversation and it so happened to be about the writing process a topic I am learning in class. I then decided to engage in conversation with them asking what they knew about the writing process. They responded telling me that they knew a lot as they are professional writers with the names of Don Murray, Mary Karr, and Anne Lamott.
Since I was learning about the writing process in class, I felt it would be smart to get information from a couple of professional writers. So, I start by asking the question “what are some thing I should know about writing and its process?” Don starts off by saying “The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: pre-writing, writing, rewriting.” Mary then gave some simple input and said “Writing is painful” Anne responded saying that what she thought I should know about writing was actually a quote from E.L Doctorow and it was that “Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. I thought these were good things to have in mind while I write but I needed them to explain a little more, so I went on to ask them “Is there any way that you guys can explain some of this into a deeper meaning.” Don started off by telling me he will tell me a little about pre-writing because it is the most important and as it was halftime of the Superbowl, and we did not have much time to discuss so he says “Pre-Writing is everything that takes place before the first draft. Pre-writing usually takes about 85 percent of the writer’s time.” Mary had just got done getting her food and she walked up to continue the conversation and said Reading stuff in an antique-sounding idiom is hard for many readers. I didn’t know what she meant by that at first, but I knew I would google it after the game ended. Anne then said that what she meant by her quote was that “You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” The game was about to start so I told them that “This was a great conversation and that I will keep the information that they gave me for the future writing I will be doing, is there any last information or tips you can tell me before we go our separate ways?” Don thought that I should take this with me when writing and keep it with me and he said “Papers are examined to see what other choices the writer might make. The primary responsibility for seeing the choices is the student. He is learning a process.” Mary then said after finishing some crab fries and having breath that smelled like the sea ““Try learning how to cut out the dull parts.” Anne finished the conversation saying “Almost all good writing begins with terrible first effort. You need to start somewhere.” The game already started about two minutes ago and we failed to realize because we were deep in a conversation about the writing process. I then thanked them for the information, and we went our separate ways. 1. What is your idea of perfect happiness?
